Fearing Fear the Walking Dead?

The first ever Fear the Walking Dead trailer made its debut during The Walking Dead season five finale last night. Fear the Walking Dead is a spinoff series written by original Walking Dead scribe Robert Kirkman. It’s set in Los Angeles during the onset of the zombie infestation, a complete departure from the Georgia – Washington D.C. setting and timeframe we’ve seen over the past five years. The main cast of Fear the Walking Dead will include Sean Cabrera (Cliff Curtis), a divorced teacher; Nancy Tomkins (Kim Dickens), a guidance counselor; and her two children, Ashley (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and drug-addled Nick (Frank Dillane). The first six episodes wrapped on February 6 and will air in late summer 2015 leading up to season six of The Walking Dead. A second season has already been green – lit for 2016.

While set in the same universe as The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead presumably will not make any reference to the original’s storyline. I’m of two minds here: on one hand, I love the cast of the show right now – Rick Grimes is the baddest dude on television. On the other hand, The Walking Dead world has always been one that didn’t have revolve around Rick and his group. It’s a world all its own, almost all of it living and dying outside of Rick’s interventions. I adored TellTale’s The Walking Dead seasons one and two, which did just about the same thing as Fear the Walking Dead is trying to do. Hopefully I’ll find out that I love The Walking Dead for its world and not just the original characters I’ve come to know so well.

Will I tune in? Of couse I will, diet Walking Dead is better than no Walking Dead. It’ll hold me over until the real thing starts up again in October.
